28.06.2017A psychology professor from the University of Northampton was one of just two international keynote speakers at a Brazilian conference which explores the links between spirituality and mental health.
Professor Chris Roe appeared at the 2017 MEDNESP conference in Rio de Janeiro, which brings together the country’s medical and practitioner communities.
The largest such event in South America, the conference included 180 presentations to more than 3,000 delegates.
Prof Roe, who is Director of the Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes, which is based at the University, said: “There are some really interesting parallels in the work of psychiatrists in Brazil who are trying to understand spiritual experiences as something that falls in the normal range of healthy human experience and the initiatives that CSAPP members are involved in in the UK.
“There’s lots of scope for collaboration in the future. As a first step, Dr Alexander Moreira-Almeida of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora will be visiting the University of Northampton in November.”
