Students’ Union hosts VIPs at Waterside Engine Shed

Date 27.09.2017

The University of Northampton Students’ Union hosted a number of local VIPs and a delegation from the Heritage Lottery Fund at its Engine Shed building on Waterside Campus.

The Grade II-listed building is to become a vibrant hub of student activity on Waterside, when the campus opens to students in September 2018.

The building will become a base from which more than 300 student volunteers organise events and activities for over 3,000 members of Sports and Societies, and a home for its advice and support services in a distinctive venue.

The project was awarded £1.3 million in Heritage Lottery Fund funding in October 2016.

Guests were welcomed to the site on Friday 22 September by University of Northampton Chief Operating Officer, Terry Neville, and Students’ Union President, Rafael Garcia-Krailing.

The guests were given a tour of the Engine Shed, which highlighted a number of heritage, architectural features including its lantern roof, original roof trusses, original train tracks and brick floor.

Rafael Garcia-Krailing, said: “Today marks another significant milestone in the Students’ Union Engine Shed Project and it’s been fantastic to be able to bring our community partners and neighbours on to site to share our vision for our place in the community in our new location.”

“We look forward to being able to work collaboratively and more closely with our neighbours over the next 12 months as the project continues in advance of our move in.”
