Podiatry experts gather in Northampton to guide future professionals

Date 20.10.2017

Podiatry undergraduates from across England came to the University of Northampton to find out first-hand about the range of careers available to them.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow’s Faculty of Podiatric Medicine’s ‘Beginning your Career in Podiatry Medicine’ was hosted at the University’s Avenue Campus, for Podiatry undergraduates.

During this first ever event held in England for the respected medical body’s newest faculty, a packed hall heard from podiatry leaders about the career journeys they have taken.

The aim was to showcase the many professional paths open to students and reflects the University of Northampton’s commitment to student employability and careers.

Contributors included Professor Emeritus and Dean of the College’s Faculty of Podiatric Medicine Robert Ashford, who gave a potted history of the College’s background from its inception in 1599 up until its function as an education and training provider for members.

Students received top tips for pre-career preparation, including the steps taken by Mr. Steve Avil, Senior Lecturer in Podiatry at the University of Northampton.

Using his interest in sport as an example, he passed on advice about the steps he took from a student to help progress his practice, techniques and skills.

These ranged from forming study groups with his peers, the voluntary work he completed to help ‘up’ his experience levels and by attending sporting events to provide assistance and extra hands-on, practical know-how.

As as a passionate racquet sports fan, he provided emergency court-side assistance to former squash pro, and world number one, Amr Shabana after he sustained a shin injury. Shabana went on to win his match.
