Staff and students dig deep and rake in a brilliant total for nursing charity

Date 4.12.2017

University of Northampton nursing students and staff have received praise from a national charity for their fundraising, on the anniversary of their namesake’s birth.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust supports UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, both working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship.

University of Northampton’s nursing staff and students started their fundraising for the charity this year and have already raised £1,111.

Activities have included raffles at induction events and celebration days to mark the end of courses. Lecturers and students even laced up their trainers and completed the Great North Run.

Edith Cavell was a British nurse during the First World War. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides.

After helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium, she was imprisoned and later executed by a firing squad in 1915 despite an international outcry.

A public appeal saw the formation in 1917 of the Nation’s Fund for Nurses, that later became Cavell Nurses’ Trust.

Nursing subject staff and students during an end of studies ‘celebration day’, part of which involved fundraising for Cavell Nurses’ Trust.

Victoria Lewis, Fundraising Manager at Cavell Nurses’ Trust, said: “The efforts from staff and students at the University of Northampton have been amazing.

“The money they have raised will help nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who are in crisis get back on their feet and, crucially, back to work. We are incredibly grateful and we’re looking forward to supporting further fundraising in 2018.”

Cindy O’Dell, Senior Lecturer for Adult Nursing at University of Northampton, added: “Our nurses never need prompting to put their hands in their pockets for a good cause. We are more than happy to keep supporting Cavell Nurses’ Trust.

“We have a saying about our nurses at Northampton: ‘Being Brilliant’. This means they always aspire to give the best care with compassion, courage and commitment. If that describes you, perhaps nursing is the career for you.”
