Law students not judging a book by its cover for Ghana school fundraiser

Law and Business students at University of Northampton are fundraising to change the lives of children in West Africa.

The UON Street Law project is raising cash and on the lookout for used or unwanted books, stationary, shoes and school bags to donate to under-privileged young students at Akosombo Presby Primary School in Ghana.

The group regularly look to apply their knowledge of international law to help the disadvantaged. They have set themselves the task of addressing two major issues hindering the academic progress of children at Akosombo Presby.

Dr Ebenezer Laryea, Lecturer in Law at UoN, said: “This project is going to literally change lives.”

“The children at the Akosombo Presby Primary School do not have access to any reading books or library facilities – this of course means that they are unable to develop good reading skills even though they want to. Also, the primary school is unable to provide learning essentials to students such as pens, pencils, exercise books and computers due to a chronic lack of funding.”

This project reflects UoN’s Changemaker initiative, which encourages staff and students to find solutions to environmental or social issues effecting people’s lives at home or abroad.

“I am so inspired by our students and the manner in which they instilled the University’s Changemaker ethos. Realising the realities and obligations of global citizenship, they want to help transform lives and inspire change in this part of the world,” added Ebenezer.

Edrina Jones, a second year Law student at University of Northampton, and fundraiser for the project said: “Every pound that is donated towards this project will help lift entire families out of long term poverty through the education of the under-privileged in West Africa.”

“A donation means that we can provide a child with a book, with which that child can develop a reading habit. Perhaps that reading habit can lead to the child doing better in school and progressing to University to get a degree.”
