Midwifery BSc Welcome Pack

Welcome to BSc (Hons) Midwifery January 2025

Midwifery is a unique and rewarding career, that will allow you to be in the privileged position of working closely with pregnant persons, women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth, promoting health and wellbeing. You will commence a curriculum based on the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards for pre-registration Midwifery education. The 2024 curriculum continues to build on the University of Northampton’s innovative active blended learning approach and will centre on case-studies helping you to explore the importance of cultural competence, evidence-led practice and professional caring to ensure you can provide effective midwifery care.

Welcome and Induction

Welcome week is the week commencing the 6 January 2025 and the first learning and teaching week is the 13 January 2025.

Equipment

You will be measured for your uniform during the first week of starting your course. Midwifery students wear a uniform when on a ‘physical’ placement – usually situated in a hospital. You will be required to wear flat, black shoes. Your first set of uniform (excluding shoes) is funded – so free of charge to individual students. You can order any replacement or additional items at your own cost.

You will be given a suggested reading list of literature that may assist you during your course, but we are not recommending that you purchase all or any of these as most are available in the University or hospital libraries.

Enhancing skills, building networks and engaging in the wider University community

The midwifery Society is an optional group run by current midwifery students who organise socials and study days throughout the academic year. Joining the society is a great way to meet like-minded people who all share common interests. It’s free to join the society and there is no commitment required, attend as many or as few events as you like. Check out their Instagram for more information: @UONmidwiferysociety.
