Why I Chose UON
Date 5 October 2022
5.10.2022I looked around a few universities, but Northampton stuck out to me as it was a new modern campus with a lot of modern attitudes and ideas toward studying.
I fell in love with the University’s branding, the idea of being different is a key factor to me, why be the same as everyone else? I wanted my university to support me in breaking the mould. I changed my course after two years and, once again, chose to study at the University of Northampton. This time I chose to stay due to the community I had built up around me and the atmosphere on campus. I’ve always found a friendly face at the university due to its size and at times it feels like its own little village, especially regarding familiar faces and buzzing atmosphere.
My Course
I’ve always found things to do outside of my course at Northampton. Whether it be regarding hobbies or my career. I’ve utilised the University Changemaker Team, a supportive bunch who provide personal support in gaining work experience and starting businesses. After seeing them, I started an internship at a global technology company called, this allowed me to go to London and work with upcoming technology trends. The Changemaker Team taught me many important skills, like what a Changemaking mindset is, CV support, as well as how to gain experience through paid and voluntary roles.
Student Life
I’ve also been part of the wider student community through the Student Union, the SU are a charity that operates for students to help them with their studies as well as provide societies, sport, and students’ voice. I took some Skiing lessons with Snowsports in the first term of this year. I’ve also been part of the Archery Team where I’ve always felt welcome. I only started Archery this January, but I’ve competed at Varsity against Bedfordshire University which was definitely the highlight of my year. I felt supported in my first contest and felt inspired shooting with experienced archers.
I’ve also been a senior representative and represented the student voice across the university, allowing students to have control over their courses and make big decisions over their education. I’ve learnt important skills about chairing meetings and taking minutes. I also socialise in a few more casual societies; this has allowed me to develop a great network of supportive and unique friends who study a variety of courses.
Northamptonshire
Outside of university, I love the area I live in. Northampton feels nice and relaxed compared to the busy, and often overwhelming cities. However, transport links are great so If I ever want to go explore the cities I can easily get to London, Coventry, Milton Keynes, and Birmingham. This is great for me because outside of University I started Ice Skating this year. Each week I easily travel via train to Milton Keynes to develop my skills. I also Roller Skate at Benham Sports centre which is right near Scholars Green Student Village.
Lastly, I also volunteer at a Scout Group that is within walking distance of the University. I run the Scout Section and educate young people in skills for life and share my passion for camping and exploring. There’s a lot to do in and around Northamptonshire. This next year I fancy having a look into the Pinnacle Climbing Centre, this is a fifteen-minute walk from the University and features Rock Climbing, Bouldering, and a Caving Experience.
Community
Life within the University of Northampton community sure keeps me busy. However, I feel no pressure to take any of these things on and usually take them on just for the experience or to gain a new skill. I’d encourage anyone who enjoys a bit of an adventure to explore the University of Northampton and what it has to offer!
