Are you a new student and/or just looking for stores to shop for Halal groceries? Here are four shops and recommendations in town, where you can shop for all you need, and at good prices too! These includes but are not limited to meat, poultry, seafoods, and general groceries

1. Ajwa Supermarket

  • Location: 59-61 Abington St, Northampton NN1 2AW
  • Travel time: 16 minutes’ walk from Waterside Campus
  • Bus: Stagecoach bus 4/4A/4B (From campus to Derngate centre bus stop, then a 6-minute walk)

Right at town centre, this is the closest store to campus or those staying close to campus. They have a variety of poultry/meat/fish options to choose from, and they also sell general groceries, fruits, and vegetables; basically, everything you need without having to worry whether it’s halal or not.

2. Al Hamra Supermarket

  • Location: 190 Kettering Rd, Northampton NN1 4BJ
  • Travel time: 27 minutes’ walk from Waterside Campus
  • Bus: Stagecoach bus 8 (From Bus station to Clare Street bus stop)

This (and the other stores) are a bit further away from campus but great options for those living in town, and around Kettering Road.

Personally, I love to shop here because they have several in-house butchers (I once spotted their halal market certificate on the wall!), and they sell pretty good deals. They also have a wider range of meat/poultry/seafood options. In addition, they sell fruits, vegetables, other groceries, snacks, and kitchen utensils.

If you’ve located Al Hamra Supermarket, the other stores are within the area.

3. Al Madina Halal Afro Caribbean shop

  • Location: 133 Kettering Rd, Northampton NN1 4BS
  • Travel time: 26 minutes’ walk from Waterside Campus
  • Bus: Stagecoach bus 8 (From Bus station to Clare Street bus stop)

The store is a 1-minute walk away from Al Hamra supermarket, they sell mainly meat, poultry, and fish, but also sell fruits and vegetables.

4. Zam Zam Supermarket & Fish Shop

  • Location: 190 Kettering Rd, Northampton NN1 4BJ
  • Travel time: 28 minutes’ walk from Waterside Campus
  • Bus: Stagecoach bus 8 (From Bus station to Clare Street bus stop)

The two stores are 2 minutes away from Al Hamra and located beside each other (most likely just different sections of the same store).

The fish shop has a wider range of seafood while the meat section is in the other store.

Things are supposedly pricier compared to Al Hamra but I have not shopped here before so I cannot confirm. Still, they are a good option if you love seafood and/or want to explore more options.

Other Options

Apart from meat/poultry, you can also shop for fruits, vegetables, and general groceries with pretty good prices at a store near Ajwa supermarket; I have never noticed the store name, but they are 2 minutes away from the supermarket.

There are also other stores like Ali’s Bazaar (farther away) and apparently stores like ASDA, Morrisons, and Kaka Stores have halal meat sections. I have never been there, so I would personally recommend going to the other stores instead.

Regardless of where you choose, I hope you have a great shopping experience!
