Meet Jennifer Larratt, a determined single mum of two, navigating the challenge of balancing family responsibilities with her aspirations for a clinical career. Jennifer, fondly addressed as Jenny, initially struggled with confidence in presenting her skills to potential employers. With the help of her Careers Development Consultant Michelle, Jenny gained a better understanding of her value and moved forward with confidence.

Can you tell us about your new position and the interview/application process?

Certainly. In a workshop, we searched for potential jobs, and I found a community Occupational Therapist position in my local NHS trust. I applied electronically, prepared for a lengthy interview using the provided documents, and took Michelle’s advice. I discussed my skills confidently, and I believed in what I was saying. I was offered the job the next day, with feedback that I was the strongest candidate.

How did you find out about the Careers and Employability Service within Student Futures?

It was during a curriculum employment workshop with Michelle, specifically designed for the Occupational Therapy final year class.

How did Michelle (Careers Development Consultant) help you?

Michelle’s workshop was transformative. I applied for the job the same evening, implementing the advised skills. Despite my scepticism and early application, Michelle’s confidence-boosting words made me realise I had nothing to lose. It gave me valuable application and interview experience within the trust I wanted to work for. Being honest about my nerves showed I cared about the role.

The entire workshop was helpful. Broken down into sections with group work in-between, it allowed us to discuss and investigate the skills presented. I want to say thank you to Michelle for her advice, encouragement, and positive thinking. Her workshop made everything seem achievable with a bit of effort and focus.

What advice would you give to students and graduates in similar situations?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the degree itself, but seeing what’s out there can inspire you to tackle the workload head-on. Keep going, and remember, there’s something to look forward to.

What are your plans for the future?

After completing my dissertation and final placement, I look forward to starting my professional career as an occupational therapist. A well-deserved week or two off is definitely on the agenda!
