Pure Profiles

Every University of Northampton researcher with a Pure account has a Pure profile.

A profile is created with core personal information, which you can customise and extend with details of educational and professional qualifications, organisational memberships, links, research interests, and more.

You have control over the content of your profile. As soon as the essential elements have been completed, profiles are made publicly available via the Pure portal.

Profiles are a great way to showcase and disseminate all aspects of your role as a researcher at Northampton.

Editing your Pure profile

To edit your profile, start by logging in from the Pure homepageusing the Log into your Pure account link.

After logging in, click the Edit profile link to open the profile editing form.

If you get lost in Pure, click the Personal tab to return to your home screen.

Saving your changes

It’s important to make sure any changes you make to you profile are committed by clicking the Save button at the bottom of the form. If you close the editing form without saving, your changes may be lost.

Profile essentials

There are three essential items that must be completed in order for your profile to be made public: a profile photo, ORCID details, and biography / research interests.

If you’re a member of staff, you’ll also need to add at least one research output or activity to your profile in order for it to be made public. This is not a requirement for PhD students.

Profile photo

Click Profile photos > Add image to upload a profile photo. The image file size must be no larger than 1mb. Please set the category to Portrait and click Update to confirm.

ORCID

ORCID provides a persistent digital profile for you as a researcher, independent of the university. Pure can connect to your ORCID account to update it with details of your research outputs. You may also find when dealing with publishers and funders that an ORCID account is required.

Click Create or Connect your ORCID ID to begin the process. If you already have an ORCID account, you’ll be able log in to connect it to your Pure profile.

If you don’t have an ORCID account, you’ll be invited to create one as part of the process.

Learn more about ORCID for researchers at the ORCID website.

Research interests

Look for the Curriculum and research description heading and click Add profile information to update Pure with details of your research interests and other areas.

An editing field will appear, set by default to Biography. Here you can add any personal information that may be relevant to your profile.

Click the Biography option and you’ll see various other headers. You can add as much detail to any of these areas as you like, but for your profile to be made public you’ll need to complete the Research interests section with details of your current activities and areas of focus as a researcher. Click Create when this is complete (please remember you also need to save your changes at the end of the process).

Browse existing profilesin Pure to see how UON researchers are making use of these options, or explore research units to find colleagues in your department.

Optional details

There are many other sections of your profile that can be edited.

Use Links to add personal websites, blogs, and other online resources. Under the Link type heading you’ll see preselected options for ResearchGate, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other popular sites.

Add external position allows you to record posts held at other institutions or organisations.

As part of this process, you’ll be asked to provide details of the organisation. Click Add external organisation and you’ll see options to either Search or Create new. It’s always worth searching first – results will appear as you type, and you can click to select an existing entry.

If you can’t find the organisation you’re looking for, use Create new to add the details manually.

Under Education / Qualification you can provide details of educational and professional qualifications.

If you’re involved with any UN Sustainable Development Goals, you can add them to your profile using the Add Sustainable Development Goals button.

Use Add keywords to search or select structured keywords relevant to your profile and interests.

Under Person expertise you can add keywords to identify research areas you have expert knowledge in. These should be single words or short phrases for each area. Type each keyword into the Area of Expertise field. A new blank field will appear in case you need to add more.

If you select Yes under Willingness to talk to media when adding areas of expertise, this information will be made available to the Marketing team for reference when responding to media enquiries.

Changing core information

Some of the basic details in your Pure profile are linked to HR data, such as your name and title, and cannot be edited directly. If you need to change core information like this, contact HR to amend your personnel record and the changes will automatically be applied to Pure.
