Congratulations to the University of Northampton’s Senior Lecturer in Acting and Drama Gemma Boaden, who has been awarded a prestigious title in recognition of her commitment to excellence in teaching.

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and teaching in higher education.

The newest National Teaching Fellow from UON is Gemma Boaden, Senior Lecturer in Acting & Drama, who joins 55 new Fellows across the country.

Successful individuals also demonstrate impact and engagement beyond their immediate academic or professional role and a commitment to, and impact of, ongoing professional development with regards to teaching and learning and/or learning support.

Gemma receives the fellowship for her work and commitment to innovation in voice training and social justice in the Higher Education classroom at the University.

Gemma said: “It is a huge honour to be named as National Teaching Fellow for 2024 for my work at the University of Northampton.

“I believe more than ever that theatre and the performing arts are an important part of creating meaningful social justice. Stories can inspire and evolve mindsets and stories are most effective when they have strong voices to tell them. The art of the spoken voice is a powerful tool which is essential for human connection, for empathy, for understanding other’s experiences, it is the heart and the foundation of social justice.

“I look forward to contributing towards fostering higher education environments where all voices are at the centre of the learning environment to ensure all are heard, understood and valued.”

Alison Johns, Advance HE Chief Executive said: “I am delighted to announce this year’s winners of the National Teaching Fellowship and Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence.

“We know that higher education has the power to transform lives but this doesn’t happen by default. Outstanding teaching is the result of knowledge, commitment, passion, energy and creativity. All of these 2024 winners demonstrate these attributes and put them into practice with excellent results.

“It is vital for student success that we invest in higher education teaching and promote the value of excellence. Congratulations to each and every one for this prestigious prize.”

The 2024 awards ceremony will take place on 3 October in Edinburgh.
