Overview

This 10 credit module considers the cutting-edge of educational practices, exploring how to create more engaging, equitable, and impactful learning experiences. You will examine emerging trends and consider their future implications as well as considering what innovation means for education and your role. You will have the opportunity to develop your theoretical knowledge and explore practical applications to practice. The course will enhance your ability to critique innovation with confidence, and support you in developing pedagogy and future-focused education to address real-world educational challenges.

This module can be taken as standalone CPD or as part of the Education MA.  If taken as standalone CPD, students can choose whether or not to complete an assessment and gain 10 credits towards an MA.  Please contact CPD@northampton.ac.uk for more information.

Entry Requirements

To study this Level 7 module, you will need an honours degree, usually at 2:2 or above, from a UK institution or equivalent.

If you have other qualifications and recent professional experience of three years or more, you will also be considered. In this case you may be interviewed and asked to demonstrate that you have engaged with the broad field of education at graduate level or equivalent.

Course Content

  • This module covers a range of contemporary topics, including:

    • Equity-Oriented and Social Justice Pedagogy: Explore how to create inclusive and equitable learning spaces that address systemic inequalities.
    • Game-Based Learning and Playful Pedagogy: Discover the power of games and play in promoting creativity, critical thinking, and motivation.
    • Communities of Innovative Practice: Connect with like-minded educators to collaborate, share ideas, and collectively drive educational innovation.
    • Posthumanism and Education: Consider how emerging technologies and changing conceptions of the human can shape the future of education.

    There is an emphasis on real-world application, allowing students to critically reflect on pedagogical challenges and develop future focused, sustainable solutions.

    Teaching and Assessment

    The module is delivered either virtually or face-to-face for 2 hours per week, from 5 to 7pm, for a total of 5 weeks.

    Students will be taught through a combination of learning activities including interactive seminars, group discussions and collaborations.

    For those that choose to complete the assessment and gain credits:
    The assessment is based on a reflective plan or a presentation (2,000 words or 10-minute presentation) which accounts for 100% of the module grade.

  • There will be an exciting opportunity for students on this module to present their work to an audience of students and delegates at our annual education conference.

  • How often do I have to attend university? 

    You will need to attend online or in person once a week for 5 weeks between 5pm and 7pm.

    How is teaching delivered?

    The module is taught by the MA Education Team, who use a range of strategies to engage participants, including digital tools, group discussions, and scenario-based learning. Learning is reflected upon in relation to the experiences of the participants, meaning that the content of the module is practice driven.

    How will I be assessed?

    Assessment is based on a reflective plan or a presentation, however there is also an option to complete this module without formal assessment. For more information about the non-assessment route, please contact CPD@northampton.ac.uk.
