Overview

The Lift and Escalator Technology HND at University of Northampton is a recognised qualification aimed at students who require a more in-depth academic qualification in Lift Technology. Covering a range of fundamentals to advanced concepts in lift and escalator technology, the course is delivered in a modular format and taught online so that you can study the learning materials, attend any online tutorial sessions, and complete your assessments remotely – albeit within a fixed schedule of dates and deadlines to meet. It allows seamless progression from the Lift and Escalator Technology Certificate/HND into Lift Engineering MSc.

This course is available via Distance Learning.

Entry Requirements

As a course designed for people who are working in the lift industry, we do not expect the majority of applicants to have any formal qualifications but to have relevant work experience. Those without relevant work experience may enter the course with one A-level qualification as well as GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above.

  • All International and EU students applying for a course with us must meet the following minimum English language requirements:

    • IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands
      for study at undergraduate level.

Course Content

  • The Lift & Escalator Technology HND covers fundamentals of lift technology and related engineering principles, through engineering design, contract management to more advanced lift or escalator topics. There is some choice within the programme, depending on your particular focus towards lifts or escalators. You will also undertake a project and case study within the programme, both of which are work related.

    The Certificate in Lift & Escalator Technology satisfies the requirement for three modules on the HNC and HND Lift & Escalator Technology and alternatively has entry points in September and January.

    All Lift Technology programmes are modular. This HND programme consists of modules, some of which are delivered and assessed by The University of Northampton and some by The Lift & Escalator Industry Association (LEIA).

    The programme is delivered through distance learning (online) and so no attendance is required. It is therefore specifically designed for those working within the industry while studying at the same time.

    Coursework is used to assess learning and offers the opportunity for you to develop and demonstrate valuable understanding of relevant engineering principles and relevant Codes and Standards, and to apply advanced problem solving, project planning and research skills. Assignments are often related to real life situations and are therefore an important learning activity.

    The assessment profile for each module has been chosen to ensure that the assessment pattern is the most efficient method of ensuring that you have achieved the learning outcomes of the programme.

    Please note the modules shown here relate to the academic year 24/25. The modules relating to the academic year 25/26 will be available from June 2025.

  • Some of the modules are delivered and assessed by The Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) and some by the University. Modules marked with an asterisk are studied through LEIA.

  • How will I be taught?

    This is an online course allowing you to study wherever is most suitable for you.

    Our virtual learning environment facilitates constant communication between you and course leaders. You are able to access key course materials at times to suit you and can submit the assignments electronically.

    How many hours per week of teaching/ personal tutoring?

    This is a difficult question to answer as it depends on your prior knowledge, and knowledge of the industry. Students typically study between 3-6 hours per week, per module.

    How will I be assessed?

    The HND programme is assessed using online multiple-choice assignments and tests, tutor marked assignments and a project proposal and report.

    What jobs can I go into from studying this course?

    Although designed for students already working within the industry, the Lift Technology programmes provide an excellent springboard for career progression within the lift and escalator, and allied industries. They are also a route to further study.

    Any specialist facilities/ features?

    This course has been developed in conjunction with the lift industry in order to be relevant to your future career and what employers will expect you to be able to do.
