Information not covered by the publication scheme
Where information is not available via the University’s Publication Scheme requests, under the Freedom of Information Act, the Environmental Information Regulations or the Data Protection Act, should be submitted to our Records Management Office.
General Information Requests
Freedom of Information and Environmental Information regulations
Since 1 January 2005 anyone, anywhere in the world can write to any UK public body, including this University, and request information. Individuals have the following rights:
- The right to be told whether the information they are requesting is held by the University, and if it is
- The right to receive copies of the information as long as it is not exempt and it is in the public interest to release
All Freedom of Information requests must be made in writing and must include your name and a return address. The University then has 20 working days to respond to your request.
If you wish to request information about the environment, (information on air, water, land, natural sites, flora and fauna, built and environmental health) you should submit a request under the Environmental Information Regulations. These requests do not need to be made in writing, but do require a name and an address for providing any response. The University has 20 working days to provide you with a response.
If the release of requested information is refused you have the right to challenge that decision. Any appeal must be made in writing within one month of receiving any partial information or refusal notice.

The Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679 a person has the right to ask to see any personal information that the University holds about them. This is known as a Data Subject Access Request.
Subject Access Requests must be made in writing to the Records Management Office. On receipt of your request we will normally ask you to provide two forms of identification. Copies must be attached to the request and will be used to ensure that your personal information is not released to anyone but you. On occasion other verification of your identity may be required.
The University has one calendar month to locate, copy and release the information to you.
On occasion all of the information may be withheld, in other cases sections, paragraphs or sentences may be redacted before release.
In most cases you have no legal right to see the personal information of others.
