University’s Dr Nathan Smith awarded Fellowship from Royal Geographical Society

Date 29.02.2016

The University of Northampton’s Dr Nathan Smith, a Lecturer in Sports Psychology, has been awarded Fellowship of the prestigious Royal Geographical Society.

Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) come from a wide range of professional backgrounds from all over the world, all united by a passion for the discipline. The Society describes Fellows as “vital to the Society’s mission to advance geography,” noting that they “enable us to achieve so much more as a result of their expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm for the discipline.”

Dr Smith’s research passions evolve around exploration and motivation, and he will soon embark on a three-week expedition to Antarctica, to investigate how people from different backgrounds respond to the extreme conditions, such as sub-zero temperatures and extreme isolation.

Dr Smith explained: “It is a real pleasure to be awarded Fellowship of the Royal Geographical Society. Staff at the RGS, and in particular Shane Winser, have been incredibly supportive of the expedition psychology research I have pursued over the past two years. The enthusiasm of both society members and guests is very rewarding and provides further impetus to continue this important line of academic enquiry.

“From a personal perspective, spending time at the RGS headquarters in London, and being surrounded by the amazing portraits of Scott, Livingstone, Stanley and Cook, is an honour and has provided immeasurable inspiration for my own intellectual endeavours.”
