We’re proud to be partners of record-breaking champions

Date 9.05.2016

Northampton Town Football Club blew the opposition away on their march to the League Two title this season – and the University of Northampton has been with them every step of the way.

The Cobblers wrapped up the campaign in style on Saturday with a 2-1 victory at Portsmouth – a result which saw the champions extend their unbeaten streak to a club record 24 games, while equalling their best-ever points haul of 99.

The University has been the club’s principal partner since 2013, when it became the Cobblers’ main shirt sponsor – a deal that was renewed for a further three years in February.

On Sunday, thousands lined the streets of Northampton to pay homage to their heroes, as the team enjoyed a celebratory open-top bus tour, pictured, followed by a civic reception.

During the weekend’s celebrations, club chairman, Kelvin Thomas, praised the University for its commitment to the Cobblers.

He said: “This was a fantastic finale to a wonderful season. The supporters and the University of Northampton have been with the club every step of the way this season and it’s great to share in the success and glory that everyone can enjoy after being crowned champions.”

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Petford, said: “It’s been a whirlwind season for the Cobblers, and as their principal partners we have been with them at every stage of their journey toward lifting the silverware. We are really looking forward to next season as Northampton Town make their mark in League One.”

The partnership means the University’s students can benefit from internships with the club, work experience and participate in takeover days at Sixfields stadium.

The University will also be using Sixfields as a venue for several events – including hosting its Varsity sports tournament in 2017 – in addition to inviting experts from the club’s coaching staff to give fitness masterclasses to the institutions sports teams.
