Shanel takes her Graduate Fashion Week collection to another world

The alien world is what led to BA (Hons) Textiles for Fashion student Shanel Brown creating an extra-terrestrial print collection for this year’s Graduate Fashion Week.

The 22-year-old, who originally hails from Deptford in South East London, took inspiration for her designs from the mysterious and unexplained Myam people and crop circles.

She said: “I wanted my collection and prints to be a bit crazy and wacky and have a used a lot of velvet, which is a bit of a challenge to sew but the finished pieces look amazing. I am pleased with the result.

“I chose to study at the University of Northampton as I wanted to do a textiles-based course but I also liked the idea of making my own pieces, rather than outsourcing them or teaming up with a fashion design student. I have learnt a lot of different printing techniques and this has made me want to go on and start my own business in the future, although I wouldn’t say no to a job with Henry Holland!”

Graduate Fashion Week takes place from Sunday 5 to Wednesday 8 June at the Truman Brewery in Shoreditch and has been firmly established as the world’s leading event for fashion graduates. The University of Northampton’s catwalk show takes place on Monday 6 June and is in partnership with holistic cosmetic company, Weleda.
