Degree Show 2016: Photography student captures how we see life through a screen

A photographic documentary showing the impact that modern technology has had on our lives will be on show at the University of Northampton’s Degree Show.

Jess Streeton, 21, is in the third year of the BA (Hons) Photographic Practice course and has been working hard to capture the overwhelming influence that mobile devices play in the modern world and how we are constantly viewing life through a screen rather than through our own eyes.

Jess, who is from Earl’s Barton said: “Most of us have the necessity to have our devices on us at all times, especially with the millennial generation and I wanted to capture this from a photographic perspective.

“One of the most challenging parts of the project was capturing the hustle and bustle of daily life, but I have enjoyed putting the images together.

“I chose the University of Northampton because it has an excellent space for photography, with dedicated studios, dark rooms and Macs to complete our work on.

“I have also visited most of the Degree Show exhibitions over the past few years, so I have been able to see the amazing standard of photography that was being created by students at the University. This inspired me to apply for a place on the Photographic Practice course.

“One of the most important things I have learned from my time at University is to not worry about what others think about your work. You just have to go and produce the work you’re happy with, regardless of others opinions.”

Jess’s work will be featured along with other students from a variety of courses from the School of The Arts at this year’s Degree Show. This will be running from Saturday 11 to Sunday 19 June at the University’s Avenue Campus.
