Textile designer Amy has her work recognised at New Designers 2016

Date 13.07.2016

Budding printed textile designer, Amy Newton, was thrilled to have her work chosen as an ‘exhibitor pick’ at this year’s New Designers exhibition in London.

The 22-year-old has just completed the final year of the BA (Hons) Surface Design and Printed Textiles course at the University of Northampton and had the opportunity to showcase her work at New Designers, which was held at the Business Centre in Islington at the end of June.

Amy specialises in hand-printed textiles and laser etched surfaces for the home environment and creates all her designs by hand, either by pen or with a pair of scissors. The key influences behind her collection were the fascination of the energetic funfair and a visit to the boutique style circus, known as ‘Gifford’s Circus’ and Amy captured these experiences within her work.

The majority of her work has been produced by the traditional process of silk screen printing and she has used a variety of different methods to create her collection, such as hand-mixed dyes, clear discharge, procion print, acid print and foiling. As well as these crafted print approaches, Amy has combined her work with a modern technology of digitally printing some textural backgrounds, which adds another design aesthetic to the final overall outcomes.

Amy said: “It was an incredible feeling to find out that I had been chosen as one of the ‘exhibitor pick’ this year, especially as I featured in the New Designer’s email newsletter too. It’s great to be recognised as someone to watch and that someone has seen something in my designs that caught their eye and inspired them, as that’s what I aim for when creating my pieces.”
