Kettering Primary School scoop award for road safety campaign

Date 14.07.2016

Pupils from Greenfields Primary School in Kettering have been honoured with the University of Northampton Ruby Changemaker Award, for their role in creating positive change for their local community.

The pupils at Greenfields worked extremely hard to create a campaign that promotes road safety around their school.  The campaign uses posters, talks and included the appointment of a lollypop lady, to help decrease the risk of road accidents.

The University awarded the children with the Ruby Changemaker award at a congratulatory ceremony on 13 July at Park Campus. Those awarded were part of the School Council, which consists of pupils from years 1 to 6.

Sandra Appleby, Headteacher at Greenfields said: “I’m extremely proud of our school council for creating this campaign and for promoting such a positive idea. The changes the students have come up with really helped promote the importance of road safety to both students and pupils. ”

Janice Watkins, Project Lead (UCEE) at the University of Northampton said “I’m very proud of the way these young changemakers have created a road safety campaign to improve their safety as to travel to and from school. This award recognises the hard work that the pupils have put in to make the school a safer place, as well as the team working skills they have developed.”

The Changemaker Student Awards form part of the University’s commitment as an Askoka U Changemaker Campus to work with, celebrate and actively engage local schoolchildren in social change. The award aims to recognise, celebrate and build children’s skills as Changemakers through innovative self-designed projects in their schools and the wider community.
