Power station façade demolition well underway at Waterside Campus

Date 27.07.2016

Demolition of the derelict power station façade at the site of the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus has begun this week.

The power station was built after the First World War and extended a number of times providing all of the town’s electricity until it was decommissioned in 1975. Following its closure, the station’s cooling towers were demolished along with most of the buildings. Today, only the façade to the substation element of the power station remained intact, but its poor structural condition means it cannot be retained as the University campus is constructed and it needs to be taken down.

The demolition of the power station façade will allow space for the construction of a new road bridge linking the Bedford Road with the Waterside Campus.
