Snapper Sam secures a season-long stint with the Cobblers

Date 5.08.2016

A student from the University of Northampton has netted a dream move – after being snapped up by Northampton Town Football Club on a season-long deal.

Photography undergraduate Sam Joyce has been appointed by the Cobblers to take match day photos for the club website, programme and social media channels. His brief is to promote Northampton as a family friendly club, with Sam taking photos of the crowd, staff and hospitality guests.

He kicked off his work experience at Town’s pre-season friendly against Queens Park Rangers, and was then on duty for the club’s open day.

“I have really enjoyed working with Northampton Town, everybody has been extremely friendly and welcoming,” said Sam.

“I have learnt a lot about candid portraiture, and photographing in crowds – I’ve had to adapt my style in order to meet the needs of the club.

“A big goal for me is to get my name known by many, to be recognised, so to have my work published by the club is a big achievement for me.”

Sam was able to get his foot in the door at Sixfields, thanks to the club’s close ties with the University.

The University of Northampton has been the Cobblers’ principal partner since 2013, when it became the club’s main shirt sponsor – a deal which was renewed for a further three years in February.

The partnership means students, like Sam, can benefit from internships with the club, work experience and participate in takeover days at Sixfields stadium.

Sam added: “My ambition is to work as a documentary photographer and this role will really help me to get some experience in this area – most employers look for experience and that’s something I am very fortunate to have.

“I’d certainly recommend the Photography degree because it’s more than a course, you have the chance to get out and be involved with local businesses and getting vital experience which is needed to progress into a career.”
