Northampton Student’ Union Radio Station set to launch

Former student Andrew Collins was chosen for the naming accolade. Andrew is currently Film Editor for the Radio Times, and is a media guru across print and radio. With TV writing credits under his belt including EastEnders and Not Going Out, he also created the BBC Radio 4 sitcom ‘Mr Blue Sky’, has presented on BBC 6 Music, and he is an acclaimed cartoonist. He has also found the time to write for publications as varied as the NME, the Guardian, Readers’ Digest, theNew Statesman, Telegraph, Northampton Chronicle & Echo and Polish Playboy to name but a few. Andrew took part in the Northampton Chronicles, a series of conversational events held at the University, before attending a naming ceremony at the radio station on Friday 25 January.

Anjali Christopher, NUMedia President, said: “I am delighted that Andrew Collins offered to officially name our Radio Station. We’ve been working long and hard to get NURadio off the ground, so it was wonderful to have our efforts rewarded by having a fantastic writer and editor coming to visit.”

She continued: “I hope this will be the start of a great relationship between our society and the professionals who work in the business, as well as providing our members with fantastic experience and exposure to the world of media beyond university life.”

Ben Wesson (NUMedia President 2011 – 12), the Students’ Union’s Vice President – Engagement and Participation, said: “It’s fantastic to have such an experienced and well-established journalist such as Andrew Collins come to meet our aspiring reporters. Coming from Northampton, I feel he was able to connect with our students and he certainly gave them some sound advice on pursuing journalism and the determination required to reach the top of industry.”

He continued: “There was no doubt in my mind that Andrew was the most fitting person to name the studio after. We hope this is the first of many inspiring speakers to visit our studio.”

The radio station, situated within the Students’ Union at Avenue campus, will be officially opened on 4 February with a champagne reception from 6pm. The inaugural broadcast will be presented by Bhavini Mistry from 7pm. To listen, visit: http://www.northamptonunion.com
