Rugby-based artist to show her rugby-union inspired work

Date 2.09.2016

A talented artist and University of Northampton graduate will be showcasing her rugby union inspired paintings at her debut solo exhibition, as well as raising money for a charity which helps young people seriously injured through sport.

Leanne Gilroy graduated in 2010 with a first class BA (Hons) in Illustration and has been producing commissions ever since; her most recent and being a high profile commission from World Rugby and an international rugby player. Leanne’s practice incorporates the use of a variety of textures and colours in multiple layers to produce portraits of great likeness and detail. She captures the essence of each individual and combines this exactness with a free and abstract contemporary style.

Her debut solo exhibition is titled ‘In This Place’ and features paintings that capture iconic moments and great players from rugby union. It will take place from Friday 9 to Friday 23 September at the Lewis Gallery at Rugby School between 2pm and 5pm. A preview evening is being held on Thursday 8 September from 6pm to 8:30pm.

Leanne, who is based in Rugby, has chosen to support the Matt Hampson Foundation, which aims to provide advice, support relief and treatment for anyone suffering serious injury or disability from participating in a sporting activity. The Foundation was established by Matt Hampson after an accident in 2005 during an England Under 21 rugby training session which left him paralysed from the neck down and having to breathe via the aid of a ventilator.

A percentage of the profits from Leanne’s exhibition will be donated to the Foundation, with one of the paintings of Jonah Lomu being auctioned off during the preview evening which will see all the proceeds being donated. Limited edition prints will also be auctioned on the night, signed by players, including Jonny Wilkinson.
