University of Northampton launches a UK first: Institute for Public Safety, Crime and Justice

Date 16.11.2015

The University of Northampton and Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northamptonshire yesterday launched the Institute for Public Safety, Crime and Justice with an event held at Park Campus.

The first Institute of its kind in the UK, The Institute for Public Safety, Crime and Justice (IPSCJ) seeks to bring together cutting-edge academic research and evidence with practice, training and development across public safety agencies.

The Institute aims to be nationally and internationally recognised for high quality academic contributions to crime prevention, crime science and criminal justice practice. Researchers within the team will develop advanced understandings of victim, witness and community priorities, while analysing crime issues and agency activity and developing detailed understanding of criminal justice and public safety interventions.

The launch event held at the University of Northampton featured addresses from the Rt Hon Damian Green, Minister for Policing, Criminal Justice and Victims, Lord Wasserman, President for the IPSCJ and Adam Simmonds, Police and Crime Commissioner for Northampton, as well as representatives from the University, the PCC and the Institute. Over 100 delegates attended the event, from various public service organisations across the country.

Nick Petford, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Northampton commented: “As the first Institute of its kind in the UK we are extremely proud to be at the forefront of research and development in this area. Working with all our partners we will produce the highest quality research that we hope will shape policy and training in the future within the delivery of criminal justice services.”
