Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship

Professional Accreditation

The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship programme is accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy*

This programme is made up of seventeen modules distributed over Levels 4, 5 and 6. Five of these modules are Practice Placement Modules. Modules have an allocation of credit points, which are aggregated at each level. On completion of the programme apprentices will have attained:

  • 120 credit points at Level 4
  • 120 credit points at Level 5
  • 120 credit points at Level 6 – with an integrated EPA process

All of the University of Northampton’s Physiotherapy BSc graduates gain an academic degree which will then allow you to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to obtain a licence to practice and become a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.

You will be taught by qualified Physiotherapists who also have additional teaching qualifications, Masters or PhD qualifications. Our teaching staff have a variety of clinical backgrounds and expertise including from acute/community care, Secondary care, Private and Voluntary Sectors, Cardiorespiratory, Neurological, Musculoskeletal, Mental health, Learning Disability, Paediatrics, Oncology and Research.

Level

The Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship is a Level 6 Apprenticeship.

Duration

36 months

Entry requirements

The admissions process aims to be flexible in its approach and will consider the applicants wider knowledge and experience to widen access to participation.

Each application is considered on its own merit.

All BSc Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship applications must have five GCSEs including Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above or Maths and English Level 2 Functional Skills. A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is an alternative to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL.

You will also need 128 UCAS points which could compromise of the following recent* qualifications or equivalents:

  • Three A Level – ABB (must include a biology or human biology focus and excludes general studies)
  • IB – 32 points (include health or science based)
  • BTEC – DDM (include health or science based)
  • Access to HE Diploma: 45 credits at level 3 (with a health or biology focus. To include 30 credits at distinction level)

Accreditation of Prior Learning

For applicants having accredited certificated learning (ACL), application for APL can be considered against whole modules within the programme. In addition, advanced standing for direct entry to level 5 of the programme may be possible via the Subject Groups, Transfer Approval Committee, for students who have studied Physiotherapy at other universities.

Personal Statement

The application must include a personal statement demonstrating the applicant’s commitment and motivation to academic study, adherence to professional values, understanding of Physiotherapy’s scope, and motivation to fulfill all course requirements.

English Language Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate a command of the English Language to allow them to succeed on their programme of study.

Where English is not the first language, or the applicant has not been educated mainly in English, they should possess:

  • IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 6.5 in all bands
    for study at undergraduate level

Work and VISA

The applicant must demonstrate:

  • Minimum of 30 hours per week in appropriate employment for the entire duration of the programme and be paid a minimum living wage
  • Hold an appropriate VISA to work and study in the UK where applicable
  • Have an employer reference and support statement

IFATE

In addition to the University’s general entry requirements, apprentices will have to comply with the requirements set out for the recruitment of apprentices informed by the Institute for Apprenticeships at point of application.

  • How will I be taught on the Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship?

    • Our Physiotherapy degree apprenticeship incorporates a range of learning and teaching methods to engage you in active learning. This includes technology enhanced learning through online workbooks, activities and interactive discussions: classroom-based learning through seminars, skills workshops, tutorials and practice–based learning. You will be a collaborator in learning with your tutors, peers and practice educators.
    • The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy stipulate that Physiotherapy students need to complete 1,000 hours of assessed practice. You will complete five placements across the programme that will meet this requirement.

    How will I be assessed on the Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship?

    • A diverse range of assessments are included in the course to ensure inclusion, academic and professional competence and to prepare you for the role of a Physiotherapist. This includes OSCE’s, VIVA’s, written assignments, journal articles, poster presentations, oral presentations, reflective essays, infographics, case studies, research, and placement assessment.
    • Support is provided by tutors for all module assignments in the form of assessment tutorials and marking criteria.
  • The delivery style allows students who wish to commit to study on a part-time basis. This is one-day per week over three years equating to approximately 45 weeks per academic year, with teaching continuing across the summer. Professional practice placement is undertaken on a full-time basis.
