    Description: The dissertation is an opportunity for students to carry out historical research over a sustained period of time, probing issues of interest to them which have arisen out of previous historical study and interests. It affirms and tests the capabilities of students to engage with history relatively independently, although the research for and production of the dissertation is supported by supervision.

    Description: The module offers training in advanced research methods for historians. This includes critical reflection on the nature of the history, as well as developing the high-level archival and project-planning skills required to complete a dissertation at Masters level. History Research Methods prepares students for the History MA dissertation by: critically reflecting on the nature of the academic discipline; providing training on source types and archival collections; and providing guidance about the process of planning and executing a project of this scale. It is the core module for the MA in History, but will also be taken by postgraduate research students in History.

This module will explore the use of violence by different types of individual as well as that used by the state.     Description: The purpose of this module is to allow students to investigate how the inhabitants of Western Europe conceptualised and experienced sexual activities and identities in the half-millenium prior to the alleged `sexual revolution? at the end of the seventeenth century. Using age, gender and race alongside sexual orientation as categories of historical analysis, students will assess how religious and political authorities as well as customary beliefs and social structures shaped how sexual intimacy was understood and practised in the distant past.
