Arriving in the UK as an international student is an exciting milestone, but it can also be a bit daunting. To help you get settled quickly and smoothly at the University of Northampton (UON), here are some essential tips on managing your money, securing accommodation, and making the most of the university’s resources.

1. Adding Money to Your International Debit Cards

Managing your finances from day one is crucial. Here are a few pointers to ensure you’re well-prepared financially:

  • Notify your bank: Before you travel, let your bank know you’re heading to the UK. This will prevent them from blocking your card due to “suspicious” international activity.
  • Top up your card in advance: Add funds to your international debit or prepaid card in advance. These accounts allow you to hold money in GBP, making it easier to manage your money without worrying about excessive foreign transaction fees.
  • Keep some cash on hand: Although card payments are widely accepted, it’s smart to have some British pounds (£50-£100) for initial expenses like transportation, snacks, or emergency purchases. The local Post Office, on St Giles Street near to Waterside campus, is a good option if you wanted to exchange some money when you arrive in Northampton.
  • Use ATMs wisely: ATMs are available at airports and across cities but be mindful of international transaction fees. Check with your bank for any partnerships with UK banks that offer free or reduced-fee withdrawals.

You can find more information on opening a bank account on our Before You Arrive FAQs.

2. Taking British Currency Out for Essentials

When you arrive in the UK, having some British pounds is essential to cover immediate expenses. Here’s how you can prepare:

  • Avoid airport currency exchanges: While convenient, currency exchanges at airports often have poor exchange rates. It’s generally better to use your international debit card at an ATM to withdraw cash.
  • Card payments for transport: Most UK public transport, including buses and trains, accept contactless payments. If you land in London, for example, you can use your debit card directly to pay for the Tube or buses. However, if you’re taking a taxi or using smaller services, it’s helpful to have cash on hand.
  • Budgeting for the first few days: Set aside about £100-£150 to cover transport, food, and other essentials during your first few days until you settle into your accommodation.

3. Download UON’s MyNorthampton and Food@UON Apps

UON’s mobile apps are an invaluable tool for international students. Here’s why you should download it:

  • Navigate the campus easily: The MyNorthampton app provides campus maps, making it easier for you to find your way around during your first days.
  • Access timetables and resources: You’ll be able to view your timetable, check room bookings, and access library services through the app.
  • Important notifications: The app sends updates on key university events, deadlines, and services, so you won’t miss out on anything important.
  • Download before arrival: Be sure to download the MyNorthampton app before you arrive in the UK so you can explore its features and familiarise yourself with campus life beforehand.

Our brand-new Food@UON app is perfect for making your transition to campus life. The app has features that would enable you to top up your ‘Cash Purse’ before arriving in England. You would then be able to use the app to pay for food and drinks in any of our outlets across Campus. A useful app to set up before you arrive and use on campus whilst setting up your UK bank account.

For instructions on how to use the MyNorthampton app, please see the information on MyNorthampton [student login required].

4. Have All Key Documents Ready

Having the right documents at your fingertips can make a world of difference when you first arrive. Here’s what you need to have:

  • Passport and visa: Always carry your passport with a valid visa or student entry clearance. Make physical and digital copies of your passport, visa, and other important documents in case they are lost.
  • BRP card or an E-Visa share code (if applicable)*
  • UON acceptance letter: Keep a printed copy of your university acceptance letter. You might be asked to show this at immigration control upon arrival.
  • Accommodation confirmation: Ensure you have proof of accommodation, whether it’s university-provided housing or private rentals. Keep copies of your booking confirmation or tenancy agreement for easy reference.
  • Health documents: Carry any necessary medical records, vaccination proof, or prescriptions, especially if you are on medication. Make sure you also have your health insurance documents, or, if you’ve paid the Immigration Health Surcharge, register for the National Health Service (NHS) as soon as possible.
  • Financial documents: If you’re on a student visa, have your financial proof ready, including bank statements or evidence of funding. You may need to show these during your visa checks.

Our dedicated Enrolment page contains a full list of the key documents you will need when you arrive to enrol at UON.

5. Secure Your Accommodation in Advance

Ensuring your accommodation is ready before you arrive is one of the most important steps for a smooth transition. Here’s how to prepare:

  • University halls of residence: If you’re staying in UON’s student accommodation, confirm your booking well in advance. Make sure you know your check-in date, and keep all the necessary paperwork and contact details handy.
  • Private accommodation: If you’re renting privately, ensure you’ve signed a contract and confirmed your move-in date with the landlord or agency. It’s also useful to have an emergency contact number in case anything goes wrong when you arrive.
  • Temporary accommodation: If your permanent accommodation isn’t available on the day of your arrival, or if you plan to arrive early, book temporary accommodation (such as a hotel or Airbnb) for a few days.
  • Prepare for move-in: Know how you’ll get from the airport to your accommodation. The UON app or Google Maps can help you navigate public transport options. If you prefer a taxi or airport transfer service, book it in advance.
