Everything you need to know about studying Education Studies

Date 12 February 2025

In this blog, I will be talking about everything you need to know about studying Education Studies from a first year student who has just completed their first semester studying this course!

Cathy Cannon

I chose to study Education Studies as it is an extremely broad course that I am initially interested in exploring and creating a rewarding career for life. This course covers a range of topics from sociology to psychology to philosophy and history amongst many more.

The First Semester

During the first semester, I have covered and completed assignments for the following modules: Childhood through time, Learning Re-imagined: disruptive and inclusive curriculum, School: Past, Present and Future and Understanding Education. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning new things within each module and creating quality pieces of work to demonstrate my understanding and give me a practice of building academic skills and writing up to university standards. For the assignments I have completed so far, my lecturers have been great in giving me feedback to support me to develop further in my journey at university and praise me with what I am doing well and the skills I can already show.

The Second Semester

During the second semester, I will be studying the following modules: Educational Landscapes, Understanding Child Development in Education, Educational Inequalities and Professional Practice in Educational Settings (Placement module). I am very excited to complete the second part of my first year at university studying these interesting modules and completing a variation of assignments.

Assignments

One thing to note about studying Education Studies is that it has no hall exams!! This is relieving to know for me as I was applying to study this course as exams are not my strong point and are something that can be very stressful. Instead, the layout for assignments on this course are broad as they range from essays to proposals to academic posters to presentations and journals! This gives you a chance to be creative and explore your own strengths and weaknesses whilst completing assignments.

Skills Development Week

Just before the Easter break, a Skills Development Week takes place to support us with our chosen placement that takes place after the Easter break and goes on for three weeks. The chosen placement is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in an educational setting. It is also useful in shaping your path so that you can decide what it is you may like to do once graduating.

Course Trips

The course also offers three different trips across the three years. These include: Holland in year 1, Atlanta in year 2 and Sweden in year 3. The trips are brilliant opportunities to create memories with friends as well as explore the concept of education within different areas of the world.

Overall, Education Studies is a perfect course to study if you would like to explore a career within education even if you aren’t sure exactly what you want to do yet!
