My first semester: what’s happened so far?

A brief into the start of university into the first semester of university and my experience.

A brief into the start of university

University was definitely one of those wishes I had growing up, I was eager to discover what being independent was really like. Nearer the time I was getting ready for my new chapter, I was told university would be the final years where I could enjoy doing whatever I liked without having to pay the full price (student discounts are definitely helpful during uni). I never imagined university to be the same way I dreamt it would be, it was definitely the opposite.

The first few weeks

Moving into your accommodation is as stressful as they say. Being someone who tends to overthink even the slightest thing, packing was a struggle for me, but luckily, I have the most amazing family who made sure I wouldn’t forget anything! (Pretty sure I forgot at least one thing). The first few weeks were unquestionably difficult for me, being far from home made me feel severely homesick, however, I tried my best to adjust to my new life for the next three years, which takes time, but I promise you will get there, even if you feel down all the time. Going to my first university lecture made me feel proud of myself, ‘I made it to university’ are the exact words I told myself in the mirror before leaving. Ever since then, I have been adjusting to living with new people, making friends, as well as becoming more independent.

Opportunities at university

There’s no doubt in saying university has opportunities for each person. I think that’s one of the many reasons I am enjoying uni. Being someone who isn’t as sociable, I was nervous about finding opportunities for myself. However, attending all the society fairs allowed me to go gain a better understanding of what may interest me. One thing I would recommend is to join as many societies as you can, even if they aren’t ones you may not do normally, as this will let you have the chance to make new friends and even get you out of your comfort zone! The opportunities are basically endless in university, there is always something to get involved in so don’t be afraid to get involved in something new!

The first semester

The first semester for me went by fast. It may feel overwhelming starting university, but you get used to it, you find your own way and your own routine which will help you in Uni. The first semester was a chance for me to gain a more in-depth understanding of what the law course would really be like, the lecturers explain the do’s and don’ts of the course, giving me a sense of clarity about what I must do as a student here. I also think that I was able to create a routine which would I could rely on to make sure I get everything done.

Summary

Overall, all you need to make sure you’re doing is being yourself and getting out of your comfort zone (it will really help). Even if you feel nervous about university, there are so many people available that can help you with pretty much anything. The first few weeks may be hard for you, like it was for me but put some faith in yourself and your first semester will fly past. Keep smiling and never give up!
