My journey to Japan: preparing for an unforgettable summer.

Student short term study and exchange experiences are valued very highly at UON. Van Anh was fortunate enough to successfully secure a place at Kansai University, in Japan, this summer. Read on to find out her top tips for taking part in a summer school.

I’m thrilled to share my experience of preparing for the Kansai Summer School in Japan. It’s been quite a journey filled with excitement, anticipation, and a fair share of challenges. As I count down the days until I embark on this incredible adventure, I want to reflect on the steps I’ve taken to get ready and share some of my tips for anyone planning a similar trip.
My Journey
The application process
It all started with an application to the Kansai Summer School. I was selected by my university, the University of Northampton (UON), to apply for this fantastic opportunity. The next step was gathering all the necessary documents for my trip. Kansai required a certificate of enrolment, which took some time to obtain. I requested this from the University’s enrolment team and ensured all my documents were in order. I also had to renew my passport, as it was due to expire within three months of my stay in Japan.
Visa application
One of the most crucial steps was applying for a visa. Kansai University advised us to start the visa process early to avoid any potential delays. They provided all the necessary documents, including a letter of acceptance and proof of enrolment. With everything in hand, I applied for my visa at the Embassy of Japan in the UK. This process took about only one week.

Travel arrangements
With my visa application underway, I turned my attention to travel arrangements. Thanks to the UON Finance Team and the huge support from the Department for Global Engagement, my course fees were paid, and I received confirmation from Kansai. My flights were also booked, and I received my booking confirmation and tickets. I took the time to carefully review all the details to ensure everything was correct.
Insurance and accommodation
Kansai University includes travel insurance in the programme fee, which was a relief. This covers accident and sickness medical expenses, providing peace of mind during my stay in Japan. Accommodation was also arranged by Kansai, and I will be staying at the Global House, which is conveniently located near the university campus.
Final preparations
As I prepare for my departure, I’m making sure I pack everything I need for my stay. This includes my laptop for assignments and presentations, and any personal items to make my stay comfortable. I am also reviewing the pre-arrival information provided by Kansai to familiarise myself with the orientation schedule and dormitory details.
Looking forward
This journey has been a whirlwind of preparations, but it’s all been worth it. I’m incredibly excited to immerse myself in Japanese culture, meet new people, and gain valuable academic experience at Kansai University. I’m grateful for the support from my university, the Kansai coordinators, and everyone who has helped me along the way.
If you’re preparing for a similar trip, my advice is to start early, stay organised, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. It’s a lot of work, but the reward of experiencing a new culture and learning environment is truly priceless.
