Stepping out of your comfort zone: Why I joined a society.

Date 14 January 2025

Joining a University Society pushed Alex out of his comfort zone. Here she reflects on how it allowed him to grow, including making new relationships and exploring new experiences.

Step outside of your comfort zone

When I first arrived at University, the idea of joining a society felt daunting. I was socially awkward, hesitant to put myself in situations I was uncomfortable with, and unsure on how I could fit in. Whilst the concept of walking into a room full of strangers was enough to tie me within my own comfort zone and avoid situations that pushed me to be more extroverted, I also realised many other students were in the same situation as me.

The university was giving me and others an opportunity to grow, and joining a society was the best way to challenge myself.

I’ll admit the decision to join a society wasn’t easy, and it took a lot of mental effort to break free from the confinements of comfort. I had spent most of my life avoiding social situations; I had convinced myself I didn’t have to interact with large groups of people to have an average university experience. However, university is where you explore new experiences, and growth is often stemmed from trying things that make you nervous.

Everyone is in the same position as you

At first, I was anxious of meeting new individuals and unsure if I would find a group I could connect with – even if we shared the same interests. But as I began attending watch parties and events, I quickly understood everyone was in the same position. Most people were aiming to make new friends and experience something different; slowly I started to become more comfortable, not just engaging in societies, but in myself.

It’s worth it in the end!

Joining a society also gave me a chance to try something new. Whether it was going out with new people, or attending events on and off campus (such as comic con, or sports competitions), these experiences have allowed me to discover new interests, making last relationships and learn valuable skills I never thought I could.

Looking back on these experiences, joining a society was one of the best decisions I could have ever made.

If you are socially awkward or hesitant about putting yourself out there, I implore you to try. Whilst friendships may not be formed instantly, connections will be made along your way, and it is a wonderful opportunity for you to explore university life, and creating lasting friendships.
