Esports placement in South Korea

Over Christmas, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Seoul, South Korea, for a three-week self-funded work placement with Gen.G, a leading organisation in the global Esports industry.

This experience was transformative, not just for my academic and career aspirations but also for my personal growth.

About the placement

As part of this placement, I worked in the educational sector, where I engaged in various tasks, including data collection, research for future projects and gaining valuable insights into the Esports industry. Gen.G’s commitment to innovation and education became evident over the period, diving into BTS operations, observing how strategic planning and collaboration drive success in this industry.

Why was this placement was special to me?

What made this opportunity even more special was the fact I became the first UK student to participate in this program, joining 21 talented students from the USA. Collaborating with such a diverse group of peers not only expanded my perspective on esports but also highlighted the importance of global connections within the industry.

What I learnt during the placement

Beyond the professional aspect, this placement offered me the chance to immerse myself in South Korean culture. From trying traditional dishes such as Bibimbap and Kimchi to experiencing the festive atmosphere of Christmas and New Year in Seoul. The city’s vibrant streets, welcoming people, and rich traditions creating a unique blend of excitement and warmth that is unforgettable.

As an Esports student, this placement aligns perfectly with my academic goals.

The knowledge and skills I gained in Seoul are invaluable as I prepare to complete my dissertation and build my portfolio. I aim to use these insights to contribute to the Esports industry back here in the UK, fostering its growth, and bridging gaps between global markets.

This experience taught me that Esports is far more than a ‘Hobby’ or ‘Competitive Arena’, it’s a dynamic, fast-growing industry with countless opportunities for innovation and collaboration. It also provided that opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, embrace new cultures, and build connections with like-minded individuals around the world.
