Getting involved

As university students, it’s very important for us to gather experiences that carry us through this journey, which is filled with good and bad times. These experiences can be anything from our academic excellence, relationships with people, networking for the future, and everything in between. Academic experience is something we all can achieve by working hard and focusing on our subject, but other experiences require us to be approachable and socially available within our University.

If we are taking initiative in our first few weeks, we can meet many peers who are in similar situations like us. Some of these peers can be international, while others are only a few hours away from home, but everyone is in the same boat as they build their lives as a student.

Social gatherings at university are the best way to approach new peers and make good networking connections for the future. These gatherings are regularly hosted by the University of Northampton and Northampton Students’ Union. At the Northampton Students’ Union, there are more than 40 societies and sports clubs to offer – social gatherings, cultural and recreational events, sports practices, local and international trips, and so much more!

Joining a society

All sports clubs and societies host student activities either on a weekly or fortnightly basis. Like the Students’ Union, they believe in creating Your Student Experience at the University and offer space to be involved in an activity, irrespective of passion, interest, time commitment or background.

When you join sports clubs and societies, you get the opportunity to meet like-minded people and fill your schedule with amazing events and competition opportunities, as well as to learn important skills. This will also help you continue a sport or hobby you love, or to try something new on this journey.

The best part is that it’s free to take part in the SU sports and societies, so it’s friendly to your student budget. There’s a possibility you might not be able to find a sports club or society you’re interested in, so use this as an opportunity to think about new ideas and to become a student leader by creating a new sports club or society, leaving a legacy behind for your future peers to be involved in.

Many committee positions in sports clubs and societies are open during Welcome Week, which is a great opportunity for you to join a team and learn a range of professional skills that will make you shine in job applications. Another great chance to meet the sports clubs and society committee members is our Union Day, where all sports clubs and society committees come together to represent their individual organisations and to get students involved in their activities.

How to join
