Saving money and the planet
Adopting a zero-waste lifestyle as a student may seem overwhelming, but with small, conscious choices you can save money and reduce waste – all while contributing to a more sustainable planet.
Here are some of my easy and practical zero waste hacks for students to incorporate into their daily routines:
First Choice, Second-Hand
Thrifting is not just trendy, but it is a fantastic way to save money and find unique items to switch up your wardrobe. Charity shops around town are a great outlet for finding cheap hidden gems while also supporting local communities. Apps like “Vinted” and “Depop” are perfect for students who want to shop, sell, and swap second-hand clothes, shoes, and other type of accessories. This way, instead of fueling the negative impact of fast fashion in this economy, we can contribute to a more responsible approach to consumption.
Reduce and Reuse
As students we often fall into the habit of relying on single-use items, whether it is plastic bottles, takeaway or coffee cups. Often prioritising convenience amidst our busy schedules results in harmful habits that favour single-use items, overlooking both their environmental impact and the long-term costs. Getting a durable reusable water bottle and a coffee cup can help cut down costs on buying water bottles and paying for your own cup each time in cafes. In addition, carrying your own plastic shopping bags is great for groceries and helps save money as you don’t have to buy them in store each time.
Meal Prepping
Meal prepping is a game-changer for students looking to save time, money and to reduce waste. By planning your meals for the week, students can avoid last minute takeouts and reduce food waste. Cooking in bulk and portioning out meals can also save so much time making things a lot easier especially for a busy university student. With meal prepping, you will eat healthier meals, stay organised, while also contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle.
