The purpose of this the module is to enable students to understand and apply clinical leadership skills to reflect the essential need for safe, effective and caring clinical practice.  Students will also develop a working knowledge of what human factors are and how they can influence clinical practise.  Covering ​subjects such as leadership styles, situational awareness, team working, communication, decision-making and clinical safety-netting, this module will provide you with the tools to practice as a safe and effective clinician.

Entry Requirements


  • All applicants must be a registered healthcare clinician (HCPC, NMC etc.)
  • A minimum of 100 credits at level 5
  • ​Applicants who do not have the required 100 Credits at level 5 through certificated learning but hold an Institute of Health and Care Development (IHCD) Paramedic qualification will be credited with 60 Credits at level 5 if they are employed in contemporary clinical practice.  Applicants may also make an additional claim for APEL for a maximum of 40 Credits at level 5 on production of evidence of continuing professional development within the last two years.​

Course Content


  • ​​This module can be completed as a standalone module to enhance your professional practice or can be completed as part of the BSc (Hons) Enhancing Paramedic Practice top up.

    ​This course is suitable for all registered clinicians who who have completed study at Foundation level or, if a HCPC registered paramedic, those with IHCD qualifications on production of evidence of CPD in the previous 2 years.

    The mode of delivery is predominantly online and is designed to allow for a flexible approach to learning, which learners will be able to fit around their professional and personal lives to cause minimal disruption and ensure that a healthy work-life balance can be maintained.

    ​The module is broken down into weekly themes and within those weekly themes you will find pre-recorded content such as bite sized lectures, discussion boards and case studies, this will roughly equate to 4 hours’ worth of online content.

    These theory elements will be supported by weekly 1-hour tutorials delivered via the collaborate virtual classroom platform and will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions, take part in case/scenario-based discussions, review current evidence and key points from that week’s theme.

  • ​​​How often do I have to attend university? 

    ​There is not compulsory attendance on campus for this module.  It is recommended you attend the university for 1 study day across the whole module.

    ​How is teaching delivered? 

    Each module will consist of a series of pre-recorded lectures that will be linked to discussion boards and case studies and a weekly live tutorial (that will also be recorded in case you cannot make it) where we will revisit key points and apply the knowledge to case studies.

    ​How will I be assessed? 

    This module includes a presentation, this is pre-recorded and submitted online and a 20-minute oral exam, which will consist of you answering questions based on key clinical leadership elements.

    Will completing this course allow me to register as a Paramedic with the HCPC? 

    ​No, this is a standalone module for existing registered clinicians and cannot be used as an option to become a HCPC Paramedic registrant.
