Staff Profile

  • Dr. Carmen Horvat is from Slovenia, where she first studied Translation and Interpretation, and Pedagogy (dual study) at University of Maribor. In 2013, Carmen moved to Loughborough, where she achieved an MSc in Sport Management in 2014. Later, in 2021, she completed a PhD in Sport Policy and Management at Loughborough University.

    Alongside her studies, Carmen successfully managed her academic and sporting obligations. Her sporting achievements include being a member of the Slovenian National Team in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (2005-2018). She competed at several World Championships, Universiades, European Championships, Mediterranean Games and other international competitions. Additionally, Carmen is an international judge and a licenced coach in the same discipline.

  • For her PhD, Carmen investigated the elite sport policy system in a small state of Slovenia. Her research interests include elite sport policy and management, in particular within the small state context, as well as organisation of the national sport systems.

    Carmen is also a member of the international research team investigating anti-doping education and interventions.

    Carmen has supervised BSc and MSc students in the area of Sports Management.
