Lost Passport and Visa Overseas
Your passport and UK visa (Biometric Residence Permit and Vignette) are very important documents and the process for replacing them if lost or stolen can be expensive and time-consuming. We recommend that you check all possible locations before reporting them as lost or stolen. We recommend that all students keep an electronic copy of both their passport and visa and keep them somewhere safe such as taking a photograph of them and storing them in your email account. If you lose your passport and/or UK visa we recommend that you contact iss@northampton.ac.uk as soon as possible for further assistance.
If you lose your passport and visa overseas, you will need to report this to the Police as soon as possible to obtain a Police Report or a Crime Reference Number. You will then need to make contact with your Embassy in the country that you have lost your passport to apply for either a temporary or new passport to re-enter the UK.
If your visa was contained in your passport you will need to apply online for a Vignette Transfer. The fee for this is £154. You will need to have obtained evidence of the loss such as the Police Report, obtained your new passport and a letter from International Student Support Services (ISSS) to confirm that you are studying with us. In addition to this you will also need to provide a photocopy of your original leave. When completing the online application form, please select the following option: “To transfer or replace your visa (vignette)”.
If your visa was a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)* card then you will need to report this online to the Home Office so they can cancel your BRP card. You will then need to apply online for a ‘replacement BRP visa’ (single-entry visa) which lets you re-enter the UK once only. The fee for this is £154. You will need to have obtained evidence of the loss such as the Police Report, obtained your new passport and a letter from International Student Support Services (ISSS) to confirm that you are studying with us. When completing the online application form, please select the following option: “A replacement biometric residence permit (BRP) visa”.
Once you have used the single-entry visa to enter the UK, you will then need to apply for a replacement BRP within one month of your return (see Lost Passport and Visa in the UK for further details).
Please ensure that you make arrangements with ISSS by emailing ISS@northampton.ac.uk on your arrival back to the UK to ensure that your passport and visa information is updated on our Student Records system.
