Transition to E-Visas

The Home Office will stop issuing BRPs for international students who submit a Student Route Visa application from 1 November onwards. Student visa applicants who apply on or after this date will be issued with an E-Visa if their visa application is successful.

What to do

New students Transition to E-Visas

New international students for the September 2024 or January 2025 intakes who apply for their Student Route Visa before 1 November 2024 may be issued with a BRP. UON will require these students to provide their BRP at enrolment for checking purposes. New international students who have been issued with a BRP will be contacted directly by the Home Office by email after arriving in the UK to convert their BRP to an E-Visa using a free of cost online process. For more information on E-Visas you can visit the government website. Please ensure that you complete this process when contacted by the Home Office so that you can properly evidence your immigration status in the UK.

Any student with a biometric residence permit (BRP) expiring on 31 December 2024 can now create a UKVI account and access their eVisa, without needing an invitation from UKVI to do so. For more information on E-Visas you can visit the government website.

For students starting in January 2025

Please note, as advised, that BRPs will display a visa expiry date of 31 December 2024 due to the UK government’s decision to convert physical immigration documents such as BRPs to E Visas, in some cases students are advised to convert their BRP to an E-Visa depending on when you applied for your visa. Below is some guidance for students joining us in January 2025.

I applied for my visa before 31 October, what do I need to bring to enrolment?

Students who applied for their visa on or before 31 October 2024 will require their passport, stamped entry clearance vignette, BRP and E Visa in order to enrol.

I applied for my visa from 1st November, what do I need to bring to enrolment?

For students who applied for their visa from 1 November onwards they will be able to view their E Visa online using the information contained in the Decision Letter on their visa application. These students will require their passport, a stamped entry clearance vignette and an E Visa share code in order to enrol.

Current students Transition to E-Visas

A significant number of current international students at UON hold a BRP with an expiry date of 31 December 2024 even though their actual visa expiry date falls after this date(please check your UKVI grant letter for the actual date your visa expires). Any student with a biometric residence permit (BRP) expiring on 31 December 2024 can now create a UKVI account and access their eVisa, without needing an invitation from UKVI to do so. For more information on E-Visas you can visit the government website.
