Deputy Northants Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to speak at University for Black History Month

Date 28.10.2024

As Black History Month draws to a close, Marianne Kimani will speak about her experiences as a Black woman working in the criminal justice system during a presentation at the University of Northampton this evening.

Marianne holds a degree in Social Policy and Criminology and has a life-long passion for social justice and policing which led her to serve for two years as a Special Constable before being appointed Deputy Commissioner.

Thanks to the UON Criminology Team, she will be presenting ‘The Marianne Chronicles: Courageously Becoming Me’ at the University next week for BHM, which this year is themed around ‘Reclaiming Narratives.’

Marianne said: “I will share my personal narrative, life experiences and lessons of overcoming challenges and challenging the status quo within social justice and law enforcement.

“As a Black woman I have faced systemic barriers and bias that have informed my life choices and decisions.

“Through resilience, education, commitment, and determination, I have navigated some of these obstacles. There is still a lot of work to be done to address equality and equity. I will tell you how I turned obstacles into opportunities for transformation and growth.”

The Marianne Chronicles: Courageously Becoming Me takes place in The Town Hall, Creative Hub, Waterside Campus, between 17:30 and 18:30 on Monday 28 October.

Students, staff and the general public are welcome to attend for free and can reserve a place via trybooking.com.
