Date 29.02.2024

The University of Northampton is pleased to announce Dr Natalie Garrett Brown has been appointed as the new Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology.

Dr Natalie Garrett Brown is a higher education leader, researcher, and dance practitioner, who studied at Trinity Laban and London Contemporary Dance School and completed her doctoral studies at Roehampton University.

Her practice and research interests focus on feminist understandings of embodied subjectivity and the ways in which dance, somatic and reflective practices can inform arts education, performance making, creativity, writing and digital cultural practices. She has expertise in practice-as-research outputs, including publications; editorial leadership; PhD supervision; conference organisation and research council project funding management (AHRC) alongside established national international industry and research networks.

She is Chair of DanceHE, a representative body for UK academics in higher education who teach and research and is a founding editor for The Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices, Intellect Publishers.

Dr Garrett Brown will take up her new role at the University of Northampton from June 2024.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Shân Wareing, said: “We are very proud that Dr Natalie Garrett Brown has been appointed as our new Dean for the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology.

“Natalie joins us from London South Bank University, where she has held the position of Dean for two years. She is an experienced strategic leader who has led teams across diverse portfolios, positively impacting student experience, financial management and transformational change.

“Natalie brings with her a huge wealth of knowledge in leadership, and most uplifting of all – a clear passion for continuing the legacy already set by our current Dean, John Sinclair, to lead our Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology.”

On her appointment, Dr Garrett Brown said: “I’m honoured to be joining the University of Northampton as the new Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with staff and students from across Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology to support its continued development and success.

“My initial priorities as Dean will focus on building relationships with our student community and partners, as well as taking proactive steps to shine a light on the fantastic research programme at the University and continue building a positive experience for all students.

“I’m really passionate about celebrating the fantastic achievements of staff, academics and students as they make a valuable impact on the world around them as leaders and innovators of the creative arts and technology sectors.”
