Event students raise thousands for local and national charities

Students from the University of Northampton have raised more than £20,000 for charity over the space of a year.

Money raised from events organised by first, second and third year Events Management students has totalled £23,115.41 during the 2017/18 academic year.

Assessed fund-raising events organised by first and second year students included themed quizzes, an 80s disco, a school sports day, a tea party, band competition and an Easter egg hunt in the Grosvenor shopping centre.

The final year students raised the bulk of the money with several high profile local charity events including the Sunset Stride for the Cynthia Spencer Hospice, Cinema Under the Stars for The Hope Centre and the 7th annual NorPIP Bike Ride held at Silverstone race circuit.

Other charities which benefited included Macmillan Cancer Support, Oxfam, Northamptonshire Carers, Across, The Samaritans and Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.

Claire Leer, Deputy Subject Leader of Events Tourism & Hospitality, said: “I’m incredibly proud of all of the hard work the students have put into organising these assessed events. Planning starts in October and the events run from February to May. To raise more than £23,000 is a fantastic achievement and the highest amount we’ve raised to date. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to raise vital funds and awareness for the charities we work with.”
