Higher Education Experience Days restart

Young people from across the county had a taster of post-18 study options this week as part of the University’s first higher education experience days in more than two years.

More than 400 primary and secondary children and students descended on Waterside campus for workshops with UON lecturers that covered make-up and midwifery and science to sociology.*

They also had the opportunity to look at Waterside’s student digs and meet and talk with students about life at university.

The Higher Education Experience Day was organised by the University’s Schools Engagement Team’s Linda Davis-Sinclair and Natasha Mycawka. The team organise a range of opportunities for children and students from the age of 9 to 18 from schools across Northamptonshire to encourage them to consider the benefits of post 18 education.

Nick Warren at Briar Hill Primary summed up the day his school attended: “Thank you so much for the sessions yesterday. The children enjoyed the sessions and found them very interesting with a few children deciding that they will be going to the University of Northampton now. The students who took us around were fabulous and the whole experience was wonderful.”

Linda Davis-Sinclair, Schools Engagement Lead, said: “We were delighted to finally offer schools the opportunity to visit us on campus again. The young people were so excited to see where our students’ study, explore what their accommodation looks like, and experience taster subject sessions.

“It was great to see them engaged, inquisitive, and full of questions, opinions, and suggestions in the workshops provided by our academic colleagues.”

*The full list of workshops offered is: Event and Tourism, Games Art and Design, Hair, Make-up and Prosthetics for Stage and Screen, Graphics and Illustration, Law, Midwifery, Podiatry, Psychology, and Sociology.
