4.04.2024As technology continues to evolve, investigators from across the UK gathered at the University of Northampton (UON) for the National Digital Investigation Conference.
Held on Tuesday 26 March, the University teamed up with The Investigator for the event that saw more than 100 digital investigators, analysts, and digital forensics experts join UON staff and students to hear the latest thinking and best practice around digital investigation and the integral role that digital evidence now plays in today’s investigations.
Dr Jordan Nunan, UON’s Senior Lecturer of Criminal Justice, launched the Criminal Justice team’s new Masters course in MA Criminal and Corporate Investigations and Intelligence, due to start in September 2025. He says: “Events like this are a great way for practitioners and academics and students from our University to enhance their continuous professional development. Our partnership with The Investigator is a great way to give our students a great networking event and explore future employment opportunities within digital investigations.”
Presenters included Dave Owen from the National Crime Agency who spoke about how investigators can detect whether data is missing from mobile devices and computers. Dr Graeme Horseman provided an overview of his latest research on a template for investigators to produce a digital strategy, a perfect blend of academia and practice.
The Investigator praised UON’s Criminal Justice team for organising a well-attended and rounded event, and UON is already looking to host further events down the line.
John Fox, UON’s Head of Criminal Justice, said: “The rapid pace of development in technology is a significant challenge for investigators and it is vital they keep up to date with the latest understanding.
“The Conference was also a chance for our Criminal Justice team to showcase our Criminal and Corporate Investigations BA, our Policing Degree and our MA in Criminal and Corporate Investigations and Intelligence which are producing a steady stream of graduates who are going into police forces and national security agencies sharing the latest practice and driving standards forward.”
