LGBT+ History Month: Activism and social change in the spotlight thanks to UON’s Pro Chancellor, Lady Phyll

Date 13.02.2025

Throughout history LGBT+ people have been activists and helped shape and create social change, advancing society for everyone using many different approaches to activism – and later this month, the University of Northampton’s Pro Chancellor will be using her voice to project this message across its Waterside Campus (and beyond).

Taking place on Tuesday 25 February, Phyllis Akua Opoku-Gyimah – widely celebrated as Lady Phyll – will talk in-depth about her acts of activism and passionate drives for social change through her work with UK Black Pride.

Lady Phyll is a British political activist who has emerged as a formidable force in LGBT+ advocacy, extending her influence far beyond our borders to make a significant global impact. Her commitment to championing equality, diversity, and inclusion has not only positioned her as a source of inspiration but also as a beacon of hope for many.

Through her instrumental role in co-founding UK Black Pride, Lady Phyll has played a pivotal role in celebrating the intersectionality of Black and LGBT+ identities, thereby illuminating the unique challenges and experiences this community faces.

In November 2024, Lady Phyll was proudly appointed as Pro Chancellor at the University of Northampton and upon her instalment, said: “This isn’t just my achievement; it belongs to everyone who has dared to dream, to fight, and to believe in a more deliberate way we can live in this world. I am committed to using this role to inspire, to break down barriers, and to pave the way for the next generation as others have done for me.”

Vice Chancellor Anne-Marie Kilday said: “Here at the University of Northampton, celebrating LGBT+ History Month isn’t about tokenism or fulfilling an equality ‘quota.’ Hard work is undertaken across our institution every month of the year to take positive action towards achieving social change and global acceptance – February just offers us a spotlight to discuss important topics which still need addressing on a local, national and global scale.

“We’re very excited to welcome our Pro Chancellor Lady Phyll on her first public platform here at the University of Northampton to talk about her passion for LGBT+ equality through her experiences, challenges and lessons learnt with activism and striving for social change. We look forward to welcoming members of the community, staff and students on site to listen to Lady Phyll and learn from her exceptional leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the cause of equality.”

This event is run in collaboration with the University of Northampton’s LGBT+ Staff Network, Women’s Network, and Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) Network.

Members of the public are warmly welcome to attend this FREE event, taking place on Tuesday 25 February from 1.30-3pm (First Floor of the Creative Hub, Waterside Campus, University Drive, Northampton, NN1 5PH).
