Postgraduate student steps into his career with luxury footwear brand

4.11.2021International student, Stejin Mathew, who is currently studying his Accounting and Finance MSC at the University of Northampton has kickstarted his career with the luxury footwear brand, Barker Shoes.
Barker have been making shoes in the Northamptonshire village of Earls Barton since 1880. Now, student Stejin brings fresh enthusiasm and his University of Northampton knowledge to the company to help them succeed in the future.
Stejin has joined Barkers as an Executive Assistant within their Finance team, supporting the company to manage the finances behind the quintessentially British brand.
Speaking about his role, Stejin said: “I was delighted to secure a role with Barker Shoes, I think their strong heritage in Northamptonshire, and their focus on quality, handmade products, which are designed to last are very important. The pride everyone in the company takes in the footwear is inspirational.”
Stejin, credits the University of Northampton with giving him the skills to stand out at interview to secure the role at Barker Shoes, said: “Daily, I’m using the skills I’ve developed throughout my course within my role at Barkers, from costing and cash flow calculations, to corporate reporting. I feel that my studies developed the skills I need for a career in finance and working in the UK.
“Moving to Northampton, from India, was a big step, from the accommodation team to the academic tutors, everyone has been very friendly and happy to answer my questions and support me.
“Northampton has a lot to offer students, I’ve settled well in the town and have made some great friends and become part of the community. I’ve been impressed by the kinds of jobs available in the area too.”
Speaking about his passion for his role with Barker Shoes, he said: “I’m enjoying my job, Barker is a great company to work for. The team are all very friendly, across the company, I feel like they really join to dots and work together, which is key to their longevity and success.
“The team have been very accommodating, I’m working part-time with them now, while I complete my Masters, and then from January, I’ll take on the position full time. As an employee, I’ll get my own pair of Barker shoes soon. I can’t wait.”
