Students set up a club to make a positive impact on the community

Date 2.10.2017

Students from the University of Northampton are urging their peers to join them and create positive change in the community.

Undergraduates Samantha Hernandez, Marie King and Toby Baily, pictured, are busy recruiting students to join the University’s new Rotaract Club.

Rotaract is an international service organisation for 18 to 30 year olds which provides a platform to bring about positive change though social action, collaboration and friendship.

The trio are in the middle of a recruitment drive, with the aim of having at least 15 members signed up, which would then allow the interest group to become an official club, affiliated to Rotary International and mentored by the Rotary District 1070’s E-Club.

Samantha said: “The club is all about volunteering, fundraising and supporting charities in whatever way we can.

“Our first event of the term will be a litter pick on The Racecourse, Northampton, on 24 October, and after that we’ll be contacting charities in the area to find out how we can help them.”

Dr Jim Davies, Rotary District 1070 Rotaract Chair, and an Associate Professor at the University, added:  “Rotaract provides the platform for global networking opportunities that change communities for the better with more than 290,000 Rotaractors in 177 countries. Rotaract provides the platform for personal and leadership development and improves employability, it develops lifelong friendships and gives a real sense of achievement through improving the lives of others.”
