This is Northampton calling! NLive manager looks to ‘Steer’ community radio evolution
Date 5.04.2023
5.04.2023The volume is increasing about the benefits of university and community radio partnerships, thanks to University of Northampton’s (UON) station.
NLive Radio was established in 2016 as the local radio station for all communities in Northampton, with content for people of any age and background who are interested in local businesses, community events and voices, charities, and great music.
Recently, the station was fully incorporated into the University of Northampton as part of the Changemaker Incubator Hub, a dedicated support environment providing expertise, resources, and funding for social impact projects.
Now part of the University’s community outreach and engagement ethos, NLive Radio provides a live link between UON students, people in communities and social enterprises.
NLive Radio is also placed at the forefront of an evolution in community radio by developing and promoting the advantages of the university partnership model.
Station Manager Martin Steers says: “Recently, we held a gathering of UK Community Radio Network members – of which I am a co-director – and it was clear our ethos and programmes and model had an influence on delegates.
“Members were ‘tuned in’ to developing similar partnership models with their local universities, which is deeply flattering. It is also exciting to think NLive Radio is at the vanguard of this evolution in community radio, and we are well-placed to advise and guide future developments.”
In recognition of some of its most recent successes – including a Christmas presents appeal that generated nearly 600 donations – NLive Radio is shortlisted for two SME Northamptonshire Business Awards, one is for Community Business.
Martin also is up for the second trophy for Business Person of the Year and adds: “The awards spotlight the incredible work of small and medium businesses enterprises across the county. Looking at the list of our co-nominees, we are proud to be in such good company after a busy and rewarding year.”
