The centre held a roundtable discussion on ‘Emerging Economies in Uncertain Times’ took place as part of UON‘s research conference on Tuesday 21 June, 2022.

We had excellent speakers – former Vice Chancellor of UON Professor Nick Petford, Deputy High Commissioner for East India Nick Low, and Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations at Nottingham University Jonathan Sullivan.

The speakers focused on China and India, with some fascinating themes emerging such as power consolidation by leaders in times of economic and social challenge and the perceived ‘weakness’ of democracy on the part of those nations governments; the pervasive influence of civilizational discourses when it comes to large nation’s claims on smaller nations linked to them historically; and the likely changes to world order as a result of both covid and the war in Ukraine.
