Online talk series focusing on key issues in humanitarianism, development and peace building with Dr Iyad Nasr, who devoted 30 years to diplomatic, humanitarian and development work, previously serving as Head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for the Middle East & North Africa

Dr Nasr is a career diplomat with expertise in humanitarianism, development and peace building. He has devoted 30 years to diplomatic, humanitarian and development work, previously serving as Head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for the Middle East & North Africa, and now represents the UN Population Fund in Syria.

These online talks followed by Q&A’s took place as follows:

Thursday 30th November, 5-6.30pm. The United Nations humanitarian, development and peace nexus. This talk explored the linkages between humanitarian, development and peace efforts in countries affected by fragility, conflict and violence.

Thursday 7th December, 5-6.30pm. International Humanitarian Law: Implementation, application, and enforcement. This talk explored how IHL differs from human rights, the key treaties and international bodies involved, and various enforcement mechanisms.

Thursday 14th December, 5-6.30pm. Localization in Humanitarian Contexts. Localization in humanitarian contexts refers to the practice of shifting more decision-making and implementation responsibilities to local actors, including local NGOs, community-based organizations, and government authorities. This talk explored the pros and cons of the approach.
